Running small teams… a different philosophy

Jason Fried Video
A plenary address at the Collaborative Technologies Conference on Tuesday was delivered by Jason Fried, the CEO of 37Signals. His lecture was titled, “Small Is Beautiful.” Here’s the lecture, in its entirety.

I am not a huge fan of Jason Fried in particular (has made some real blunders when commenting on his and others’ blogs), but I sure love 37signals software services. In general I agree with a lot of the philosophy he outlines in the speech… particularly the focus on efficiency, quiet time, trimming the fat (my interpretation). If you are a small company who needs to compete with the big guys, I recommend you listen in.

What makes me sick

What makes me sick are oil company executives who justify their criminal profits by saying America has it good compared to other countries and that high fuel prices help curb demand. In the movie Failure to Launch How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days there is a really cute part where the two stars are playing a game that requires one party to determine if the other party is lying or not. If they believe the party to be lying they say B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T. Seriously though, these oil companies are full of liers and I am saying Bullshit (forgive me Lord) right now about this horrific approach of winning our confidence.

Four seconds is a L-O-N-G time in an NBA game, people!

[UDPATE: I sent Mark a message on this and he was kind enough to respond via email. Apparently I was not the only one to notice!]

Dirk doesn’t have to try an alley-oop pass last night for the Mavericks if someone watches the clock. I could be wrong, but at the time I felt something was amiss. Four seconds went off the clock in error last night beginning around 46.8 seconds left in the game. Surely I am not the only one who noticed. It appeared to me that the whistle blew but the scorekeeper either did not hear the whistle or choses to let a few seconds tick off. You tell me? Four seconds is a L-O-N-G time in an NBA game people.

When churches close their doors

As an aside: This blog may end up being more of a rant page than a valuable blog
where you learn anything. Let me apologize to my two readers. Will try to do better.

So, as the two of you know, I work at a church. I love the fact I am somehow contributing to the body of Christ daily with my talents and mad skillz. It isn’t all rosey flowers however. Working for a church which has a last century governance and management model is tough on a GenX’r. How do you think the Emergent Church movement is being fueled?

Preparing for Customers

// February 8th, 2006 // No Comments » // Business, Community, Management

Tonight is my first time in Dunn Bros coffee shop here in Frisco, Texas. Now this is a place that knows how to prepare for customers. These guys have comfortable sofa chairs with stands for laptops that pull right up to you. Towards the back, they have what looks to be a conference table for six. They have free WIFI internet. They have local artwork on the walls for sale. They have a large, clean bathroom. They have a well marked emergency exit in the back. These guys have most everything needed to get me to come back instead of going to my normal chair at Starbucks.
